In February of 2014, I kayaked the entire length of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with 5 friends.

We did so self-support style which meant that we carried everything we needed (food, camping gear, etc.) in our kayaks without any external support from rafts or other means. I documented my experiences from the trip in the following articles and also included a few articles related to my preparation for the trip which are presented below in correct chronological order.

I hope you enjoy reading them and perhaps they will even provide some useful information or inspiration for you own self-support kayak trip down the Grand Canyon or another river!

Into the Canyon

February 10, 2014 / Pat Brown / Adventure, Grand Canyon, Kayaking

Early on February 16, 2014, six whitewater kayaks will cast off from the shores of Lee’s Ferry onto the Colorado River. Peter has spent an enormous amount of time exploring and climbing through Zion National Park, and he couldn’t wait to share one of his favorite places with us. […]

Grand Canyon Self-Support Gear Preparation

March 20, 2014 / Pat Brown / Grand Canyon

Only in recent years has it become more common for kayakers to self-support the Grand Canyon. Even then, compared to the total number of people who go down the canyon, it’s still a fairly small number of people who take on the extra challenge of carrying all of their gear down the whole canyon. When […]

Proximity Waypoints in the Grand Canyon

March 22, 2014 / Pat Brown / GPS, Grand Canyon, Technology

It should come as no surprise that navigating the Grand Canyon is a serious undertaking even in today’s GPS age. So before I embarked on a self-support kayak trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, I made sure I was prepared with the most up to date, accurate navigational data and tools. My […]
